bataille de Maëstricht

The battle of Maëstricht

The royal family paid their last homage to him one year after his death. His two sons, although aged between 13 and 14 were baptized by BOSSUET in person.
The elder had for godparents the King and Queen. The younger, His Highness the Dauphin and Mademoiselle de Montpensier.

During a campaign in Holland led by the King, Maëstricht, main town of the Brabant, was invaded. On the 25th of June 1673, d’ARTAGNAN, called for reinforcement, met his death, at the head of his troops, during a fierce assault.
The heroic end and the outstanding character of this man from Gascony is in this homage :

"D'Artagnan and glory have the same coffin"

Hearing of his death, LOUIS XIV shed tears on his courageous Musketeer and praised his merits.
